It’s a well-known adage from the music industry that the second album is always the toughest; usually the band has played and refined its first set of songs since its early days and they all go into that debut album. So when the record company say it’s time for the second album, often the ‘creative well’ is dry or at least all the best songs have been used, so the band has to write new material and prove that they can deliver again; that’s why it’s called the difficult second album.
Triumph & Disasters ‘second album’ is our hair-care range. And our ‘killer hair’ party’s our way to celebrate, think of it as the launch of our second album.
And so it was that ‘the Melbourne Killer hair party’ became our second stop on some kind of evolving T&D world tour - Auckland, Melbourne, New York.
Melbourne came about because of Julie, our Australian salon Distributor. Julie wanted some fun in her home city, ‘We need to do something for the people’ she said, ‘so they know we’re here, what we’re about and who Triumph & Disaster is ”. So it was that the challenge was set for us to put on a show for the 100 or so guests from Melbourne Salons, Fashion & Lifestyle Retailers, Media and Friends.
The venue, ‘Something More café’ in Fitzroy was the perfect choice for an unusually balmy Autumn evening. Guests were greeted by layered jazz riffs from guitarist Jamal Zacharia, that colluded to create a kicked-back ‘Newport Jazz’ vibe. Cocktails via Four Pillars gin and Capi Tonic, wine from Mooraduc Estate, and craft beer from Moa Brewing Co ensured everyone was kept lubricated and refreshed, while Food from Henrietta’s Southern Styled Fried Chicken ensured no one left hungry, T&D are after all, responsible hosts.
The formalities consisted of a few words from T&D Founder - Dion Nash, who chose the opportunity to espouse his views on the world of skin and hair informing the crowd that T&D’s products “ not only style, but also treat the hair at the same time”. Then it was time for the one and only, Rocco D’Amore, T&D’s very own Australian Brand Ambassador. Rocco proceeded to put on a show full of cheeky but technical product advice, whilst creating androgynous looks for both her male and female models utilising the best of Coltrane clay and Ponsonby Pomade.
Once the formalities were out of the way, the party continued to roll into the warm Victorian night with Melbourne’s creative community enjoying the melodic Grooves of ‘Autumn in New York’. The party was a great chance for T&D to get to know the people who run and work the stores and salons where our products are sold. We made some fantastic new friends, reacquainted ourselves with old ones and got to tell them all bout our new range. But more importantly we shared a drink and a story with people whom without, it would be impossible to grow a brand, people passionate about their professions and people who we hope enjoyed meeting us as much as we enjoyed meeting them, and we hope some new fans of T&D.
We are still a small Antipodean brand and there is a long way to go before we are a global force, but with the good vibes and kind words exchanged at the Melbourne Killer Hair session, we know we are in a good place. And the cigar on a City rooftop, flanked by good friends and Negroni’s felt like a fitting way to finish a cracking event – cheers to Melbourne, here’s to many more good times ahead.
